The Blarney Stone is a stone set in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower in the Irish village of Blarney.
Blarney Castle was built in 1446. Its walls are 18 feet thick. High thick walls were necessary in those days to provide protection against enemy attacks.
Kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the "gift of gab" and the ability to talk people into things.
How did the Blarney Stone get its magic powers?
No one really knows for sure. One legend says that an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward a king who had saved her from drowning.
Kissing the stone while under the spell gave the king the ability to speak sweetly and to talk people into doing anything he wanted them to do.
It's very hard to reach the stone. It sits between the main castle wall and a balcony. Kissers have to bend back and down, holding iron rails for support.
Every year thousands of tourists visit the castle and try to kiss the Blarney Stone.
