Bermuda is an island in the northwest Atlantic Ocean. On Good Friday, at Bermuda's beautiful beaches, you will see lots of colorful kites flying in the sky.
What do kites have to do with Easter?
Flying kites on Good Friday is based on a story about a British teacher who wanted to help Bermudans understand Christ’s rising to heaven. The teacher made a kite shaped like a cross and painted a picture of Jesus on it. He flew the kite to show the Ascension.
Kite flying on Good Friday has since become a tradition in Bermuda. Some people spend months making large kites out of long sticks, glue, string, and colorful tissue paper. Many of the kites are octagonal (8 sides) or hexagonal (6 sides) and some have noisemakers called hummers attached to them.
Lately, however, fewer and fewer people are making their own kites. Instead, they buy plastic ones that are sold in the stores and at stands on the beach where the kite festival takes place.
The largest Good Friday Kite Festival is held at Bermuda's Horseshoe Bay Beach where they have kite contests, entertainment and Bermudan Easter hot cross buns and codfish cakes.
