How the Deer Got Antlers

This legend was told by the Cherokee people of the Southeast US.

Long ago, the deer had no antlers. The deer, a very fast runner, and the rabbit, a great jumper, argued all the time about which one of them could go farther in the same time.

The animals decided to set up a race. The beaver carved a set of beautiful antlers as a prize for the winner.

On the day of the race, the animals gathered at the edge of the forest. The beaver set down the antlers to mark the starting point of the race through the forest and back.

As the animals admired the antlers, the rabbit said, "I don't know this part of the land. I'm going to have a quick look through the forest to see where I'll be racing."

The rabbit was gone for a long time and the others got suspicious. They sent the beaver to see what was happening. The beaver found the rabbit chewing on bushes and pulling them out to make a clear path.

The beaver returned and told the others what the rabbit was up to. "That's cheating!" said the bear.

The rabbit soon came out of the forest. When he was accused of cheating, he shouted, "Let's start the race right now. I was not cheating!"

"I'll prove it," said the beaver. The animals followed the beaver into the forest and they saw the cleared path.

"What a trickster! You did cheat!" said the bear.

The rabbit began to argue, but the bear said, "Rabbit, you lied and cheated to win the prize. The deer was going to run a fair race. Playing fair wins over cheating, so the deer will get the antlers."

The rabbit hopped away in anger and the antlers were placed on the deer's head. They fit perfectly and everyone agreed they looked beautiful.
