How the Fly Saved the River

A legend from the Anishnabe people of the Great Lakes region

There once was a beautiful river that had water so delicious and pure that all the animals drank from it.

One day a big moose came to the river, tasted the water and drank and drank. The moose returned the next day and every day after that.

The animals began to worry that the moose would drink all the water and leave the river dry. The animals tried everything they could think of to keep the moose away from the water.

Finally, a tiny fly suggested that she could get the moose to leave. The other animals laughed at the fly.

"Don't be ridiculous," said the bear. "How can a tiny fly frighten away a giant moose? Even I'm afraid to get close to it."

"I'm going to at least try," said the fly as she flew straight for the moose.

The fly jumped all over the moose, biting and biting until the moose went crazy. The moose ran back and forth along the river. He shook his head, stomped his feet and made loud noises, but he couldn't get rid of the pesky fly.

Finally the moose gave up. He ran away from the river and didn't come back.

"Hurray for the fly!" shouted the animals. "You saved the river!"

"Even the small can fight the strong if they use their brains to think," answered the fly.
