The Minotaur was a scary monster with the head of a bull and the body of a large hairy man. It lived in the center of a dark, twisting maze called the Labyrinth. It could never escape because the maze was so big and confusing.
The monster belonged to King Minos, who lived on the island of Crete. King Minos was very angry with the people of Athens. His son had died there and he wanted revenge. He demanded that every year, Athens send 7 girls and 7 boys to the island of Crete to face the Minotaur. None ever survived.
Theseus, a brave prince of Athens, could not stand to see his people suffer. “I will go to Crete,” he said. “I will kill the Minotaur so Athens will be free from this curse.”
When Theseus arrived on Crete, he met the very clever Princess Ariadne, daughter of King Minos. Ariadne knew of Theseus's bravery and she wanted to help him. She secretly gave him a ball of string and a sword.
“Tie this string at the entrance of the Labyrinth,” she said. “As you walk, unroll it behind you. When you find the Minotaur, fight it with this sword. Then follow the string to escape.”
Theseus went into the maze alone. The dark halls twisted and turned, but he kept going until he found the Minotaur. With his sword, he fought and killed the evil creature.
With the Minotaur dead, Theseus used the string to find his way out of the Labyrinth. Theseus, Ariadne and the other 13 children from Athens quickly boarded their ship and fled Crete. Athens was free from the curse and Theseus became a true hero.
