Long, long ago, the Cloud People held a feast. "Come up, all of you who have wings, and let us feed you."
The hungry turtle heard about the feast and really wanted to go. "I wish I had wings like you," he said, coming out of his hole to join the happy birds. "Can't you take me with you?"
"You can't fly without wings," answered the birds. "Besides, you always cause trouble."
"I am really hungry. Please let me go with you," pleaded the turtle. "If you each give me a feather, I think I will be able to fly."
The birds finally agreed and the feathered turtle took off with them and flew up to the clouds.
When they arrived, the turtle said to the Cloud People, "My name is All of You and I want to thank you for inviting me to this feast."
"Help yourselves," said the Cloud People. "This feast is for all of you."
The turtle took this as an invitation just for him. He ate so much that there were only a few scraps left for the birds.
"You tricked us!" cried the birds. They were so angry that they pulled off the feathers from the turtle and flew away.
"Now how will I get home?" asked the turtle.
"I've got it!" he said to last bird. "You can fly down and tell my family to put soft blankets and leaves on the ground. I will jump!"
Instead, the bird didn't say a thing to the turtle family. When the turtle jumped and landed on the hard ground, his shell cracked into many pieces. He had to glue it together.
Legend says that this is why turtle shells look uneven and cracked.
