The Wawel Dragon Statue in Krakow, Poland

The Dragon of Wawel Hill

A Legend from Poland

Long ago, a scary dragon lived in a dark cave at the foot of Wawel Hill along the banks of the Vistula River. The fire-breathing dragon poisoned the air, killed animals and terrified all the people who lived in the surrounding countryside.

Many brave men tried to kill the dragon, but before they could get close enough, the dragon blew fire on them and they were burned to death.

One day, a boy named Krak came up with a plan. Krak left a huge meal next to the dragon's cave. The meal was full of lamb, hot spices and sulphur, a powder that causes burning. The dragon couldn't resist and gulped it all down very quickly.

The spices and the sulphur burned the dragon's stomach. The dragon got so thirsty that it drank and drank the water from the river until it exploded and died. At last the people were free of the dragon.

The Wawel Dragon remains a symbol of the city of Krakow. A metal statue of the dragon on Wawel Hill is now a popular place for tourists to stop.
