The Chimera, a monster from Greek myths, was unlike any other creature in the world. The Chimera had the body of a lion, a goat’s head sticking out of its back, and a snake for a tail. It could even breathe fire.
The Chimera is said to be a sister to other well-known monsters - Cerberus, the dog with three heads, and the Hydra swamp monster.
The Chimera lived in the mountains. It frightened everyone and attacked animals. Villagers could sometimes see fire in the hills and knew the Chimera was nearby.
A hero named Bellerophon decided to kill the monster. He used Pegasus, Poseidon's magical horse with wings, to carry him high above the Chimera, away from its breath of fire. They reached a spot where Bellerophon could use his long spear with a lead tip to strike the Chimera right in the mouth. The Chimera’s own fire breath melted the lead, which caused the beast to die.
