Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and Courage

Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom, courage, and smart ideas. She was known for helping heroes, solving problems, and keeping cities safe.

Unlike other gods, Athena did not have a mother. She came out of Zeus’s head fully grown and already wearing armor. Zeus was amazed by her and she soon became his favorite daughter.

Athena’s special symbols were the owl, which stood for wisdom, and the olive tree, which stood for peace. She gave the first olive tree to the city of Athens. The people loved her gift so much that they named their city after her. They also built a beautiful temple called the Parthenon to honor her.

Athena had many talents. People said she invented useful things like ships, plows and rakes. She also taught women how to weave and make pottery.

Many heroes asked Athena for help during their adventures. She helped defeat Medusa and showed soldiers what to do in battle. Even though she was a goddess of war, she still liked peace more than fighting.

Athena wanted people to think before they acted. The Greeks prayed to her when they needed smart ideas or help making good choices.
