Zeus was the most powerful of all the Greek gods. He was known for his thunderbolt, which was made by the Cyclopes. He could throw it to make thunder and lightning flash across the sky. When Zeus was happy, the skies were calm. When he was angry, lightning struck and thunder boomed.
Zeus had an unusual beginning. His father, Cronus, was a giant Titan who was afraid that one of his children would grow up to take his place. To stop that, Cronus swallowed each baby as soon as it was born.
When Zeus was born, his mother, Rhea, wanted to save him. She hid him in a secret cave on the island of Crete, where Zeus grew strong and brave.
When he was old enough, Zeus came back to fight his father. He made Cronus cough up all the children he swallowed. Then Zeus and his brothers and sisters worked together to defeat the Titans and then to rule the world from their home on Mount Olympus.
Zeus became ruler of the earth and sky, his brother Poseidon ruled the sea, and his brother Hades ruled the Underworld. His sister Hera became queen of the gods.
Zeus was also the father of many famous gods and heroes, like Apollo, Artemis, Hercules, and Perseus.
As king of the gods, Zeus made sure everyone followed the rules of heaven and earth. The Ancient Greeks respected Zeus and held huge Olympic Games every four years in his honor.
