Hades was the Greek god of the Underworld, the place where souls went after people died.
Hades was the brother of Zeus and Poseidon. Zeus ruled the sky, Poseidon ruled the sea, and Hades ruled over the Underworld.
Hades lived in a dark palace below the Earth. His loyal dog, Cerberus, guarded the gates. Cerberus was a scary creature with three heads. He made sure that no one entered or left the Underworld without permission.
The Cyclopes made Hades a magic helmet called the Helm of Darkness. When he wore it, he became invisible. He used the helmet to help other gods fight monsters and protect the world.
Hades felt lonely in the Underworld and wanted a wife. Zeus said he could marry his daughter Persephone. Persephone did not want to live away from her mother, Demeter. In the end, she agreed to spend only part of the year with Hades in the Underworld. When Persephone returned to Earth, flowers bloomed and plants grew. When she went back to the Underworld, the land grew colder. People believed the seasons changed because of her travels. Persephone became known as the goddess of spring.
Many people were afraid of Hades because he was the god of the dead. They thought it was bad luck to say his name. But they still respected him and prayed to him as the ruler of the Underworld.
